Background

Norwegian cider is getting attention across the borders, and won (among other things) nine awards at the cider competition in San Sebastian this November. Hardanger is now working to get a cider brand know out through the world as high quality product. We want to invite the world to Hardanger to try our ciders, and also cidermakers from around the world to show their ciders to a Norwegian audience.

Sørfjorden in Hardanger is a historic place for Norwegian cider and the city of Odda is the perfect place for our festival. Odda has lots of cider farms within 20 kilometers, and 12 within a 70 kilometer radius.

THE STORY BEHIND SMELTEVERKET AND CYANAMIDEN

From 1906, the world's largest carbide factory was established in Odda, together with a cyanamide factory. The pioneering project with hydropower development in Tyssedal made it possible to start a power-intensive industry.

Over two years, the factory area numbered over 100 buildings, and the farming community and the tourist city were transformed into an industrial city. Odda Smeltverk was primarily a metallurgical company, and 95% of the products were exported to around 80 countries throughout the world. The factory went bankrupt in 2003, and some of the buildings were preserved by the National Antiquarian as a technical and industrial cultural heritage with high conservation value. Many of the buildings have gained new use, and land is now an attractive district for culture, industry, and experiences. The Hardanger International Ciderfest is held in the Cyanamiden factory.
